Pilot Projects: Proven Success in Oil Sludge Remediation

Envorem’s breakthrough sludge remediation technology has been successfully deployed in high-impact pilot projects with some of the world’s most influential oil companies. From working with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) to conducting a production scale field trial with Aramco, our technology has consistently delivered cost-effective, low-emission, and high-yield results.

By proving its effectiveness in real-world conditions, these pilots have demonstrated that oil sludge can be efficiently recovered and repurposed, reducing environmental impact and turning waste into valuable resources.

Aramco Pilot Project: Transforming Sludge Management at Shaybah

In a landmark collaboration with Saudi Aramco, Envorem tackled a major sludge management challenge at the Shaybah Gas Oil Processing Station No. 2. The project was to address the sludges generated by the periodic shutdown and maintenance of Shaybah GOSP 2. The aim was to treat and recycle these industrial wastes on-site as opposed to transporting them substantial distances for disposal at one of Saudi Aramco approved industrial waste management service providers. The primary objectives were to:

  • confirm the amount of waste that could be diverted from landfill

  • demonstrate the amount of oil and water that could be recycled

  • determine any cost benefits and,

  • to confirm reductions in emissions and other environmental benefits.

Proven Results:

The pilot system operated at a steady 2 tonnes per hour, processing sludge extracted directly from oil pits and tankers. From the 1,300 cubic metres of sludge processed, the results were highly significant:

  • We recovered and returned 2,080 bbl of oil to the production process

  • Returned 920m3 of water for reuse

  • Cleaned the entrained sand to a non-hazardous level for return to the environment

  • Overall, diverted 97.5% of the waste from landfill

  • Saved 155 metric tonnes CO2 from transport emissions

  • Reduced disposal costs by >40%

This trial validated that Envorem’s technology is not only viable but superior, setting a new benchmark for sustainable and profitable sludge remediation in the oil industry.

Residual waste reduced by 97%

Aramco were so delighted by the results, Aramco’s Environmental Protection Department chose to present the project and its groundbreaking results at ADIPEC 2024 – believed to be the world’s largest oil exhibition and conference.

Oman Pilot Project: A Breakthrough for National Oil Operations

Envorem successfully completed a pilot project with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), tackling sludge and oil-contaminated soil. This trial proved that our high-speed cavitation process delivers a cleaner, faster, and more cost-effective alternative to traditional remediation methods.

Proven Results:

The system operated at a steady 2 tonnes per hour, processing sludge extracted directly from oil pits and tankers. The results demonstrated:

  • >99% of hydrocarbons were recovered, producing crude of usable quality.

  • Solids were cleaned to <5000 ppm TPH, exceeding the required 10,000 ppm standard.

  • Recovered oil reduced the need for fresh extraction, cutting carbon emissions.

  • Disposal emissions were significantly reduced compared to incineration.

  • Potential for net-positive cost savings, as recovered oil offsets processing costs.

This trial validated that Envorem’s technology is not only viable but superior, setting a new benchmark for sustainable and profitable sludge remediation in the oil industry.

The equipment is built into 40ft transportable containers for plug & play set-up on site allowing it to be sited close to the waste source.
